What is Dentistry Asleep? Dentistry asleep or
Deep
Sedation Dentistry involves an anesthesiologist (Or in some cases a trained,
qualified & licensed dentist) putting the patient to sleep before any dental work begins.
The more popular and common
approach is Mild Sedation
Dentistry whereas
you remain awake with a mild sedation designed to make you more comfortable.
This type of dentistry is known as Conscious Sedation Dentistry. This
is an excellent alternative to full sedation dentistry with cost benefits and the ability
to be partially awake during your operation and yet reduce most dental
suffering.
What are the advantages of sedation dentistry? Simply put
no or little pain during the procedure and reduced fear during the operation. In many cases
the work of five separate medical appointments can be performed during one
dental sedation session. More often then not, you will feel like you have slept
through your dental appointment.
What are the negatives? The principle negative is cost
because an anesthesiology team may be required for this operation. There is
also a slight increase risk involved because of the sedation.
What is required to start sedition dentistry? The dentist
will need your complete medical records to determine if
you are a possible candidate. A further medical examination is usually required
as well as a preliminary dental inspection. If you are medically able to
undergo sedation dentistry, you may be required to take a strong sedation prior
to you’re arrival. Naturally, you will have to be driven to and from your dental
appointment and you should not operate a car within that 12 to 24 hour period
Is this form of dentistry for
you? It depends, does dentistry make you nervous? Does dentistry
cause pain? Are you prepared to pay for comfort?
